In January 2010, a family from Malawi decided to pay for Esnat Matenje to go to secondary school. Estnat, aged thirteen, had passed her exams at Lingagzi Primary School and had been selected to go on to Chitedze Day Secondary School. However, she was turned away from the secondary school as she did not have the money to pay for the fees. Both her father and mother died from AIDS over ten years ago, and she is currently living with her eighteen year old sister who is an unemployed single mother.
